AN ONLINE petition calling for better public access to the Diamond Harbour ferry terminal has attracted 170 signatures in one week. Set up by the Diamond Harbour Residents Association, the petition calls on the city council and Environment Canterbury to “ensure that within 100m of the Diamond Harbour ferry terminal, there is adequate bus parking on the Lyttelton wharf and that there is a drop-off/pick-up zone for private vehicles.” It follows a decision by the Lyttelton Port Company to reduce bus parking spaces from three to one and not provide a pick-up/drop-off zone. The Banks Peninsula Community Board is to have an urgent meeting with the LPC, ECan and the city council on Monday, to discuss the changes. •Turn to page 8

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK THE PRESSURE continues to build on the authorities over public access to the Diamond Harbour ferry terminal in Lyttelton. We report on page 1 today an online petition over the issue has attracted 170 signatures in a week. The Diamond Harbour Residents Association isn’t overly chuffed with what’s happening on the Lyttelton side and are showing they are willing to fight. The petition is targeted at the city council and Environment Canterbury as a way of circumnavigating some of the port company’s plans. What the residents’ association now needs is for the community board to stand alongside them and ensure the changes to the terminal are passenger friendly. As I said previously, the ferry terminal at Lyttelton is a shocker, and well overdue for a revamp. Critical to that revamp is making it passenger-friendly. – Barry Clarke

Maori village goes to the dogs By Bridget Rutherford and Sarla Donovan THE FERRYMEAD site that was once home to the failed Christchurch Maori Village could be turned into a dog park. City councillor Yani Johanson and the Linwood-CentralHeathcote Community Board have asked city council staff to prepare a report on whether the site could be used as a dog exercise area. The village was set up by Tamaki Heritage Yani Johanson Experiences, owned by brothers Doug and Mike Tamaki, in 2007 but closed after the earthquakes because of financial issues. Several larger buildings at the park were dismantled and transported back to the company’s Rotorua base after its closure in 2012, while huts and fencing from the replica Pa were sold to the Ko Tane Living Maori Village at Christchurch’s Willowbank Wildlife Park. In Brief MOUNTAIN BIKER INJURED An injured mountain biker was helicoptered out of Urumau Reserve above Lyttelton at about 3pm on Saturday. Lyttelton Fire Brigade chief fire officer Mark Buckley said they had to extract the biker by air as the location made it difficult to transport her by stretcher. She had “banged herself up pretty badly,” Mr Buckley said, and was flown directly to Christchurch Hospital for treatment. Her injuries were not understood to be life-threatening. CAR PARK SKATEBOARDING Skateboarders using the new Sumner Centre car park may be warned off with signs prohibiting the activity. A nearby motel owner raised concerns recently with the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board about the affect skateboarding in the car park was having on his business. The board has asked city council staff for advice on how to restrict skateboarding activity in the car park, which may include signs banning it.

RSA exploring options for clubrooms By Sarla Donovan THE Sumner-Redcliffs RSA has been caught in no-man’s land since the February 22, 2011, earthquake destroyed its Wakefield Ave clubrooms. Builder Ian Caldwell, 47, died when boulders from a cliff face crashed onto the RSA and a building site next door. The building was red-stickered and subsequently demolished in 2014. Since then, the club has been without a headquarters and there are no current plans to rebuild. “We can’t,” president Bill Joines told the Bay Harbour News. “We don’t have any land.” Though the club has been looking at different options, there’s nothing concrete on the horizon. “We’re sounding out different places at the moment. We’ve had an insurance payout, but I don’t know if it will go to the extent of rebuilding.” Sumner-Redcliffs RSA was started in 1932, as a sub-branch of the Christchurch RSA. Early activities in the first year involved smoko, a social evening attended by the mayor and the club’s first annual dance. However, the new club looked after more than just social events. With high unemployment at that time, it was called upon to

Kitty Fenton is one of them – she says there’s usually about a dozen people there. “We meet and have a bit of a yarn, a catch up and a drink. Then at 6pm, the president says the Ode of Remembrance, ‘Lest We Forget.’” She says after six years, she’s got used to not having a building. Mr Joines, who served in the SAS from 1955-58, said one of the options they would consider was joining another local club, similar to what the New Brighton RSA had done. It’s now linked with the New Brighton Bowling Club with

Sumner Bowling Club secretary Colin Thompson said the idea had been brought up informally in the past, but no formal approach had been made by the Sumner RSA. Mr Thompson wouldn’t comment on whether the club would be open to the idea, saying it would be up to the committee. The bowling club’s Richmond Hill Rd clubrooms are being rebuilt next year, with work expected to start in April. Meanwhile, two 1947 bronze plaques commemorating the Anzacs – placed on stone columns at the entrance to the former RSA clubrooms – are to be brought out of storage and the columns rebuilt. The city council is working with stonemasons on the project and will look at reusing some of the original stone, which was salvaged and stockpiled in Lyttelton. Working group to look at future of Scott Park By Sarla Donovan A WORKING group looking at the layout and future development of Scott Park in Mt Pleasant will meet next Wednesday. The group was set up after Coastal Pathway Group chairman Scott Babington last month raised concerns about public access to the Scott Park foreshore near the Ferrymead Bridge. Mr Babington said the meeting next week would be a chance to start developing an overall masterplan for park users. “We want to know what it’s going to look like in 10 years time.” The working group will include Linwood-CentralHeathcote Community Board chairwoman Sally Buck and board members Tim Lindley and Darrell Latham. The Coastal Pathway Trust, Mt Pleasant Residents Association, Windsport Association, Christchurch Yacht Club and the Mt Pleasant Scouts have also been invited. access difficult for the public. The boatshed was built this year to replace one damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes. With a footprint of 486m2 and maximum height of 7.3m, it is substantially larger than the building it replaced, which was 275m2 and approximately 4m high. A condition of the build, which wasn’t publicly notified, required the club to plant and maintain totara trees between the building and the coastal pathway. Dr Latham said he wanted to get a better overview of the issues relating to Scott Park. “I’m particularly interested in the access to the public boat ramp and jetty below the Fer-

rymead Bridge footpath and to the legal paper road that goes right along the foreshore in front of the shed and clubhouse.” He said it was curious that the Coastal Pathway ran along the edge of Main Rd rather than along the foreshore. Mr Babington said the group had wanted the Coastal Pathway to go beside the water but were put off during the design development stage. “We were very keen to go along the foreshore but one of the city council employees spoke very strongly . . . that yachting sports needed priority.” The meeting would provide the opportunity to “seek clarification on a range of issues,” Mr Babington said.

New home for Mandu By Sarla Donovan GINGER CAT Mandu has a new home. Mandu featured in the Bay Harbour News last month after he made friends with residents of Edith Cavell Lifecare in Sumner. A resident, Denise Brown, wanted to make sure he had a home, so she put out the call for the owner to get in touch. But no-one came forward to claim the ginger tom, so he’s now been adopted by the daughter of 90-year-old Ed Cotter, who was one of his favourite residents at the rest home (hence the name, short for Kathmandu.) Mr Cotter was part of the first

New Zealand expedition to the Himalayas in 1951, along with George Lowe, Earle Riddiford and Ed Hillary. Ms Brown said she very pleased Mandu had found a stable home with Jacqui Cotter, who lives in Brighton. “He went off quite happily on Saturday; he’s already been micro-chipped and the vet said he was two-years-old and a lovely cat.” Although some residents were upset to see him go, “one of the cooks cried,” Ms Brown said people were pleased he’d found a place to call home. One where Mr Cotter can go still go and visit.

The Banks Peninsula Community Board has asked city council staff to investigate the possibility after a request from the committee last week. Though neither is a legal reserve, committee member Thomas Kulpe told the board it made sense to take responsibility for managing the gullies, as it meant the committee could officially commit resources to their development and maintenance. “It would (also) provide a democratic forum where the principles of the reserve committe can be applied. The problem at the moment is there’s no agreed principles and no vision for the amenities (which have been developed).

Terminal plan met with petition

•From page 1 Bay Harbour News reported last week the community board had asked for the meeting after the newspaper revealed two weeks ago the LPC’s decision to reduce bus parking spaces to one and not provide a pick-up/drop-off zone. Diamond Harbour Residents Association chairman Richard Suggate told a board meeting last week that the LPC’s refusal to provide a drop-off zone would force the infirm, disabled or with heavy parcels, to walk from Norwich Quay. He said the ferry was the only link for Diamond Harbour residents if there were road closures and access should be suitable for people with disabilities, the elderly and very young, “including not having to use steps or walk long distances.” Port company chief executive Peter Davie said LPC staff met with the Banks Peninsula Community Board on July 31. “At that meeting staff showed board members the plans for the Diamond Harbour ferry upgrade and changed access for the buses. Our plans have not changed since presenting them to the Community Board in July. “At the July meeting we explained to the community board that there will be a reduction in space for the buses to park. The upgrade also includes direct stair access onto the Oxford St overbridge, which people can use to get to the ferry.

LEAKS IN the Sumner community pool have been fixed ahead of the November opening – but the pool committee is now nearly $7000 in the red. An application to the LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board’s discretionary fund to help it cover the cost was declined, as the repairs are considered capital works and don’t fit the fund’s criteria. The pool committee is now looking for other funding sources to help cover the $6688 cost. Most of the running costs for the community-owned and man-

aged pool come from key rental, with about 360 keys available for local families to rent at $150 a season. Committee member Liz Beaglehole said the leaks had to be fixed as they were pushing up the operational costs of heating and chlorinating water. She was confident of finding other avenues of funding. The pool, which is used by local school and community groups and families, is run by a committee of volunteers. It opens for the summer season on November 11 at 7am.

Dimaond Harbour pupils have no trouble with Aladdin show SCHOOLS THE DIAMOND Harbour School production, Aladdin Trouble, wowed the crowd at the Diamond Harbour community hall. The pantomime-style musical was filled with puns, corny dad jokes and, of course, a lot of singing. Every pupil was involved from the leading roles by year 7s and 8s to dance routines and small acting roles for those in years 0-6. The leading roles were performed by Flora Dean as Scherazarde, Alex Cameron as the Sultan, Olive Tuipulotu as the Genie, with the baddie, Abanazar, played by Adam Anderson, and eventual love birds, Aladdin and Jasmine, were played by Tane Payne and Anna Clinch. The show wouldn’t have been complete without a pantomime dame – Widow Twankey was played by the extremely funny Darcy McMillan. Deputy principal Fiona Rice thanked everyone who helped behind the scenes with props and costume-making. “It really wouldn’t work without that

support.” Year 7 pupil Poppy Kirkwood played one of the Gems who danced in Alladin’s cave of wonders. She said being involved in Aladdin Trouble was tough

but rewarding. “I loved the production this year but it was hard work to keep up with school work and choreograph dances, plus learn my lines. But overall it was really fun.”

This year the Lyttelton U13â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s travelled to Titahi Bay/Norths to play for the Challenge Shield and then hosted the Titahi Bay/Norths team two weeks later. Although the Lyttelton team were beaten in both games, the games were played in good spirit with Lyttelton playing adventurous rugby right to the end, although out played by a better team.

Diamond Harbour resident and Banks Peninsula Community Board Mt Herbert representative, Felix Dawson, is unhappy with proposed changes to the ferry terminal Lyttelton Port Company is currently in the process of upgrading the Diamond Harbour ferry terminal services. This includes a re-configured waiting area, replacement of the previously removed pedestrian bridge and reduction of the bus parking area. The reduced bus area will exclude the opportunity for car drop-offs on the wharf, and possibly remove the bus pick-up service, relocating it to Norwich Quay. So the ferry upgrade involves a reduction in service. Black Cat has recently advised the Banks Peninsula Community Board that the ferry service provides more than 100,000 passenger trips annually. This is made up of residents and visitors. For Diamond Harbour residents, the alternative transport option is a 35min winding drive. A recent slip off the side of the road in Church Bay has reduced the road to one lane. Any more slippage and the road is gone, with the only alternative a back road – little more than a badly paved stock route currently littered with sink holes, arising it would seem from a poorly laid sewer. If these roads become unusable – which is possible – the ferry becomes the only access to Diamond Harbour. The ferry service matters. LPC is currently proposing to reduce the service to “make better utilisation of the land”. That is, to provide car parks for its

staff who are being shifted into their new offices about 400m away. So is the best utilisation car parking for about 100 people or public transport for 100,000? What is it with LPC? When it applied for a 40ha land reclamation consent, it argued that among other benefits, it would enable logs to be shifted from in front of Norwich Quay. It has reclaimed about 10ha which is now covered in newly-imported parked cars. LPC recently advised the board that moving the logs is 10 years away. On day one of the harbour dredging consent, the first question to LPC from the commissioner, fresh from reading about the new cruise ship berth to be built, was: Is the dredging required for the cruise ships? The LPC representative smoothly advised the panel that the answer was no, as the cruise ships have a shallow draft. We are now told that the appeal on the granting of the dredging consent will delay the cruise ship berth. Sorry local businesses. Now we have a multi-million dollar must-have office build without adequate parking, and for the sake of one bus park the poor old commuters will have to walk. Come on LPC – you guys are paid the big bucks. Do the job, do the right thing. Start talking to the users. Retain the current ferry service.

Sumner runners help Canty cross-country team to silver medal TWO SUMNER Running Club members helped Canterbury to a medal at the inter-regional crosscountry championships in Timaru on Thursday. Year 8 Heathcote Valley Primary School pupil, Maddie Sharpe, and year 7 Redcliffs School pupil, Charlie Bailey, ran for the Canterbury primary schools team in the championship. The pair both recorded impressive results, finishing ninth in their age groups and helping the Canterbury team to a silver medal. However, the team was unable to retain the Phil Costly Shield, which was won by Wellington. The shield is competed for
